Jewish Calendar
The Jewish Calendar is based upon the lunar and solar cycles. Months are based on the moon whereas a leap month is added every 7 out of 19 years in the Jewish Calendar to make sure the holidays stay in their appropriate seasons. When deciding whether or not to add a leap year the Jewish court also took into account practical factors. For example if the roads were very wet making travel more dificult they might add a leap month before the Passover spring holiday so that pilgrims coming to Jerusalem would have an easier time.
Jewish Charity in the Jewish Calendar
Most important from our point of view is the times that the Jewish Calendar encourages Jewish Charity. Traditionally, the corners of the fields were left for the poor during harvest time. Holidays are a traditional time for tzedakah. The memorial prayer in which charity is pledged is said on Yom Kippur, Sukkot (the 8th day), Pesach and Shavuot. In addition charity is given on the eve of some Holidays:
- During the Kaparot service before Yom Kippur
- On the eve of Purim
In addition to these special times many give some charity everyday following morning prayers.
We at hitechgiving have introduced a Jewish New Years Cards program for giving on the eve of the Holiday season as well as a giving program for special occasions such as anniversaries, etc. Of course we invite you to contribute to our program of giving with intergrity whenever it is convenient to you.
